Fastest Computer
Only the name has changed. IBM has maintained the manufacturers of the fastest computers in the world. Instead of the perennial winner of the Blue Gene / L, this time is Roadrunner based on U.S. Energy Department, Los Alamos National Laboratory. This IBM supercomputer reached a petaflop speeds, first ever by any team.
The ranking was announced today at the International Supercomputing Conference in Dresden, Germany, event biennial which ranks the 500 most powerful computers in the world. According to the Top500 rankings, reaching a maximum yield of 1026 petaFLOPS (floating point operations per second) to take first place. A petaflop equals one billion, or one thousand trillion calculations per second. The No. 2 Blue Gene / L, also made by IBM at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, achieved a speed of 478.2 teraflops.
IBM Roadrunner is powered by 12,240 IBM PowerXCell 8i chips cell similar to those found in console games. The basic functions are performed by computing AMD Opteron 6562 dual heart, leaving the Cell chips for the solution of all work necessary for the mathematical calculus intensive in which the specialized processors. You need the space of 278 refrigerator-racks of servers in size.
IBM maintaining its dominant position in supercomputing, makes 210 of the 500 supercomputers. 5 of the 10 supercomputers is IBM. Just behind them is HP (Hewlett-Packard), which 183 fastest computers.

- Intel dominates the market for high-end processors with 75 percent of all systems on the list and 90 per cent of quad-core based systems that have been classified.
